Generally Speaking:
There are a number of activities that hatchery staff need help with on an ongoing basis. Without the assistance of volunteers, it would be impossible to carry out many of our objectives. Below is a description of activities that volunteers can get involved with.
Snorkel Counts:We float down the river from time to time to count steelhead. We put on dry suits, face masks and snorkels. This is most interesting and gives you an aspect of the river not normally attainable else wise.
Fish
Seines: Come and learn while you enumerate coho, steelhead, cutthroat and maybe even chinook. We seine the 'Hatchery pool' just down river from our facility. Lots of people come out for this as it offers many opportunities to learn.
Fish Culture: All aspects of raising fish in a hatchery. Egg takes, trough cleaning, feeding or bulk sampling are just a few to name.
Hatchery Maintenance:
The buildings and hatchery site need dailymaintenance. Many volunteers lend assistance with painting, cleaning, net mending and general upkeep.
Fish Releases:Each spring, the smolts are released into the river. From there, they head to the ocean to begin the salt water phase of their life cycle. smolts such as steelhead and cutthroat (100 grams each) are transported to the mouth of the river via transport tank and released.
Open House/Public Events:
Once or twice a year the Society holds an open house at the hatchery, complete with a salmon barbecue, tours, games for the kids and prize draws. These days always require a lot of help both for the preparations and the event itself. There are also opportunities for attending other events.
Fund Raising:
The Society depends on corporate and private donations to continue its education programs and daily operations. Any fund raising ideas from volunteers are gladly welcomed.
Open Creel: Volunteers even come up with their own projects accenting on their particular interests and skills.
